Bleeding

Rectal bleeding can be a concerning symptom, but it is not always indicative of a serious condition. Rectal bleeding refers to any blood that passes from your anus. It can appear as blood on toilet paper, in the toilet bowl, or mixed with stool. The color of the blood can range from bright red to dark maroon, and sometimes it can be black and tarry if it originates from higher in the digestive tract.

Rectal bleeding can result from a variety of conditions, some of which are minor and others more serious. Here are some common causes:

  • Hemorrhoids and Anal Fissures

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

  • Colorectal Polyps and Cancer

  • Gastrointestinal ulcers

Investigation of bleeding is usually done through endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) and occasionally with various medical imaging modalities.

Rectal bleeding should never be ignored, and it is essential to seek medical advice to determine the underlying cause. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and improve outcomes. If you experience any symptoms of rectal bleeding, consult your doctor promptly for appropriate evaluation and management.
