Gastroscopy
What is it?
Gastroscopy is a procedure which is performed using an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible telescope with a high-definition camera at the end. The procedure is supported by high qualified anaesthetists who administer deep sedation for patient comfort. The endoscope is passed from the mouth through the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. It allows for detailed inspection of the lining for identification of various abnormalities and if required for acquisition of biopsy samples. Therapeutic procedures can also be performed ranging from treatment of bleeding lesions, dilation of strictures and even polyp resection.
The procedure can take 5-15 minutes depending on the findings and complexity of individual cases. On the day of the procedure, you will have an opportunity to discuss the procedure with myself and I endeavour to answer any queries.
Locations in Perth
You will have the option of having your procedure either at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco or Mount Lawley.
Preparation
You will be required to fast from food and liquids prior to the procedure and the specific instructions will be provided by my reception staff. We will also review your medication list to advise on any changes that need to be made for the procedure.
Post procedure
The sedatives used are short acting and you should be awake soon after the completion of the procedure. You may feel sleepy but our skilled endoscopy nurses will care and monitor you in the recovery ward. You should not expect to have any pain or significant discomfort. Some patients do report a very minor sore throat which should resolve in a day. As the sedation can affect your judgement for up to 24 hours post procedure, you should not drive or operate heavy machinery in this period. It would be advisable to have a designated person to take you home. I will speak to you following the procedure to discuss the findings.
